Trust Your Care
to a Top Surgeon
Worried about your ears sticking out? Unable to style your hair as you want because your prominent ears need to be covered? Otoplasty is a transformative procedure that can correct this deformity, giving the ears a natural appearance and boosting confidence. Our skilled surgeons, Dr. Eric Carniol and Dr. Paul Carniol, offer advanced techniques for otoplasty, including incisionless otoplasty, ensuring excellent results and minimal scarring.
Otoplasty for Children and Adults: A Life-Changing Procedure
Otoplasty is designed to address the common concern of “bat ears” or “dumbo ears.” These terms can have a negative impact on self-esteem, making otoplasty a life-changing surgery for both children and adults. For adults, this procedure can be performed in the office, usually with a light sedation pill. For children as well as adults that are undergoing other procedures, it is performed with sedation anesthesia in the operating room, and patients go home the same day.
Otoplasty Techniques
Dr. Carniol offers incisionless otoplasty, a technique that leaves no visible scars. This “no scar” approach involves using tiny needles to reshape and position the ears. Stitches are placed under the skin to hold the ears in their new position, providing a permanent and natural appearance. This technique eliminates the need for a scalpel and requires only a light dressing for ONE night. Patients get to start enjoying their results even sooner with this technique. Within weeks, patients can resume sports activities, and normal daily life can be resumed the next day. Adults may undergo incisionless otoplasty in our Summit, New Jersey office, while children and adults can opt for the operating room if preferred.
Incisionless Otoplasty also carries lower severe risks than traditional otoplasty. Because there is less cutting and elevating the cartilage, the amount of swelling and bruising is significantly smaller than the traditional surgery.
For those who may require a traditional otoplasty, also known as open otoplasty, a small incision is made behind the ear. The cartilage is then reshaped and repositioned, and a small amount of tissue may be removed for further correction. Stitches are typically removed within a week, and the dressing is left in place for several days. Normal activities can be resumed within several weeks following the procedure.
Otoplasty can be combined with other procedures to achieve comprehensive results. Commonly, patients undergoing otoplasty may also choose to have cosmetic mole removal, facial implants, dermal fillers, or Botox to further enhance their appearance.
Ear deformities can occur in newborns, such as floppy ears or pointy ears. It’s crucial to address these issues early, as the cartilage becomes firmer in the first few days of life, and the deformity can become permanent. At Carniol Plastic Surgery, we consider newborn ear deformity an “emergency.” Our non-invasive treatment involves using the EarWell, EarBuddies, or InfantEar Systems, which can hold the ear in normal position for a few weeks while the ear firms up. If you have a newborn with an ear deformity, don’t hesitate to call us at 908-598-1400.
Dr. Eric Carniol is a fantastic doctor! He has treated me and my young daughter. My daughter was in a stage where she wouldn’t let other doctors near her ears. He made her feel so comfortable that she let him conduct the entire examination and even smiled though much of it!! He explained everything clearly too. He certainly cares about his patients and we will be back.”
