Do you see your acne scars every day when you look in the mirror? Do you wish your acne/scars were gone?
Acne & Acne Scars Can Continue Throughout Adulthood
While most people will “outgrow” acne, many will have acne continue into adulthood and can be a lifelong problem. When scarring occurs, especially acne scars on the face, it can be quite noticeable. How to get rid of acne scars depends on many factors. What will help with your acne scars or your acne? Between laser skin treatment, Microneedle-Radiofrequency, dermal fillers, Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix and PRP, and liposuction-fat grafting, Dr. Paul Carniol and Dr. Eric Carniol would love to help you pick the treatment best for your skin.
Acne Scar Treatments
Acne scars can be treated with many different methods depending on how severe they are, the number, and the locations. While we would love for complete acne scar removal, the real goal of the best acne scar treatment is dramatic improvement.
Laser Treatment of Acne Scars & Skin Resurfacing
Using a laser on the skin can stimulate collagen and elastic fibers. This means that the skin can become tighter and the scars will shrink and become less deep. Acne scars on the face can be blended with the surrounding skin. This treatment is ideal for patients with a broad area of scarring and discoloration. We use a fractional CO2 laser to treat the scar areas as needed.
There is no pain with this procedure. After the fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, there may be a light sunburn appearance for 2 days. Depending on your preference, you can still attend work or school. The skin cells will be stimulated to start making more collagen. The Erbium laser can also be combined to get even better results! The effects are best seen in 3-6 months as it takes time for your body to grown new collagen and elastic fibers.
Most patients receive a noticeable improvement after a single treatment. The facial acne scar laser treatment may be repeated in 6 months for even further improvements. This is the best solution for acne scars when a large area is an issue. Laser acne scar treatment is also called laser skin resurfacing. This can also improve signs of facial aging, dark spots, and can provide benefits of a nonsurgical facelift.
Microneedle-Radiofrequency Acne Scar Treatment
Microneedle RF is a relatively new treatment for acne scars and skin tightening. By using microneedle technology, radiofrequency energy is applied to the skin. This is the best treatment for acne scars most frequently over the cheeks, but can be used in other areas. Patients are able to return to work the next day with minimal swelling. Typically, patients do 3 treatments 6 weeks apart for best results. Microneedle-Radiofrequency can work for stretch marks on the belly from pregnancy or loose arm skin after weight loss.
Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM)/Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Using the body’s own growth factors, individual scars can be further improved. By drawing a small amount of blood from your arm and extracting the growth factors, the Drs. Carniol are able to then use your own body’s platelet rich plasma to heal the scars. This treatment can be performed along with laser acne scar treatment and with microneedle-radiofrequency treatment. This treatment can also be performed alone. Treatments are targeted to the specific scars and can be repeated every 6 weeks as needed. PRFM is also used for patients with hair loss for treatments in the scalp.
Subcision with Filler or Fat for Acne Scars
Some acne scars are so “tethered” down to the deeper tissue that they can be difficult to elevate. After numbing the skin, a tiny needle is used to separate the scar from the deeper tissue. This will immediately allow the atrophic scarring to elevate. To prevent the scar from tethering again, facial filler can be used. Depending on the location, dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Versa may be used. Fat removed from the belly or thighs (liposuction) can also be performed in the office and those fat cells can transferred to improve the acne scars. Individual scars are treated in a particular session. This is a great acne scar treatment for the most severe acne scars.

This wonderful lady had deep acne scars. In order to optimize the improvement of her scars she had a combination of fractional laser, laser resurfacing and fillers. The fractional laser was used to tighten and shrink the scars. An Erbium laser was used to smooth the surface of the scars. Fillers were used to reduce the depth of the scars. With this she had a dramatic improvement in the appearance of her scars. Since every acne scar is different, treatment of acne scars should be custom designed to maximize the improvement.
